In conjunction with BMoA’s upcoming exhibition The Bakersfield Sound: Roll Out the Red Carpet, the Bakersfield Museum of Art presents a special Art After Dark event to celebrate Bakersfield’s unique music history and explore its applications in today’s modern context.

This month, we held a roundtable discussion with local music historians and performers for a deep dive into all things Bakersfield Sound. We bring the conversation to you via a takeover of the Hello, Bakersfield podcast.

The discussion centered around the Bakersfield Sound and its continued influence. The conversation is split into three sections: 1) Defining the Bakersfield Sound, 2) Historical and Cultural Influences which contributed to the formation of Bakersfield Sound, and 3) Legacy and Cultural Relevance

The Bakersfield Sound: Roll Out the Red Carpet, premiering in 2021, will explore the characters, styles, and aesthetics of iconic California Country. Bound to their southern roots, yet influenced by their proximity to Los Angeles, artists such as The Maddox Brothers and Rose, Merle Haggard, and Buck Owens and the Buckaroos defined a sound and style uniquely their own. This exhibition will highlight stage costumes, guitars, album covers, and film footage, bringing insight to the melding of cultures, styles, and motivations iconically associated with the Bakersfield Sound.

BMoA Celebrates Pride

AADPrideSquare_Sponsored.png

While we could not have a physical event this year, we used our online platforms to celebrate Pride and give a voice to the LGBTQ+ community. On June 25th we began a nine-day campaign celebrating, educating, and memorializing Pride and queer artists within the greater context of conversations about diversity, inclusiveness, and intersectionality.
