Summer Art Camp is colorful fun and educational too

If you are looking for an educational and fun activity to stimulate creativity in your children this summer, the Bakersfield Museum of Art's Art Camp is the perfect spot.
Under the direction of instructors, Brent Eviston and Vikki Cruz, 6-12 year olds will learn drawing, painting, sculpture and art history through imaginative projects in a creative environment.
Classes are held Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-noon at the Bakersfield Museum of Art, 1930 R St. Campers may choose one to four weeks.
Week One - drawing and painting: Students will work with pencil, charcoal and other drawing materials to learn the basics of drawing. They will also learn color and composition using acrylic paint and watercolor.
Week Two- creativity: Students will develop creativity through a series of challenging projects including designing new creatures, sculpting and painting them, drawing expressive pictures of people using oil pastels and painting abstracted images.
Week Three - design: This week will have many three-dimensional components. Students will learn about architecture and build structures using basic materials like cardboard and newspaper, functional projects like lighting and use wire and paper to design and create their own lamps. They will learn about graphic design will design posters, stamps and magnets.
Week Four - Storytelling: Students will use the ancient technique of relief sculpture to tell their own stories, making shadow puppets with black paper, making their own memoirs into a book and learning the art of comic books.

The Art Camp student show is July 31 from 5:30 to 7pm.
For the younger set, “Side by Side,” a class for toddlers and their parents or caregivers, is held daily from June 2-6. Choose from 9 - 10 a.m. or 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. Children ages three to five will learn a variety of art projects that can easily be replicated at home. Enjoy art activities with your children and watch them build important school readieness abilities such as social/language skills, problem solving, and kinesthetic awareness.Class fees are $60 for non-members, $50 for Bakersfield Museum of Art Members.
