The Betty Mahoney Scholarship for the Visual Arts is a $1,000 award available to a Kern County high school senior or college student. The award is conferred upon a student whose submitted portfolio demonstrates an interest and talent in the visual arts, and whose intent is to major in the visual arts at a college or university. The Betty Mahoney Scholarship honors the life of the late Betty Mahoney. Mrs. Mahoney actively supported the Bakersfield Museum of Art and the arts in Bakersfield and Kern County. She also was an advocate of arts education for children and young adults.
Lemus has a goal to pursue a career in video production and has already worked on several pieces. He enrolled in Liberty's video production program where he learned editing techniques and worked on numerous projects for the school, including the Liberty News Show. He is also interested in photography.
Lemus will attend the Art Institute of Los Angeles and was accepted into the digital filmmaking and video production course at that school. His goal is to become a professional filmmaker in the future.
Application forms are available upon request or through any high school or college art instructors. Deadline for submission is May 1 each year.
