Join us as exhibiting artist Stephen Douglas discusses his work in Paint + Process, now on view.

Grounded in traditional portraiture Douglas experienced significant success throughout his early career, working in the studio with sitter. The light of the studio was rather blatant and ultimately encouraged Douglas to shift his work outdoors. The work in Paint + Process is the result of this shift.  Living in Venice, CA, the artist found “beach light eliminated description in a way that studio light describes it.” The materiality of the paint became the focus instead of relying on illusion or naturalism to execute paintings.
